In 2012, US-based Westinghouse Electric Co. Llc and NPCIL signed an agreement for the construction work. The project was expected to be completed by 2022-23, over three stages. NPCIL planned to acquire 777hectares of land to build a 1,000MW nuclear project, mainly covering Jasapara and two other nearby villages. The 6,000 mega-watt nuclear power plant project, proposed to be built by Nuclear Power Corp. of India (NPCIL), has been facing protests from locals who refused to give up their land for the project. The area is rich with green vegetation and mango orchards known for its Sosiya variety. arious NGOs and activists had come out in the farmers’ support. Since 2009, when the Indian government gave an in-principle approval to the Rs50,000 crore Mithivirdi nuclear project, these anti-nuclear activists and scientists have been distributing pamphlets and showing films on what happened at nuclear plants in Russia’s Chernobyl and Fukushima in Japan. India has planned to increase its nuclear power generation capacity from the existing 6,780 MW to 63,000 MW by 2032. The sites at Chhaya Mithi Virdi in Gujarat and Kovvada in Andhra Pradesh were accorded ‘In Principle’ approval and designated for setting up nuclear power plants in technical cooperation with United States of America (USA). In this regard, discussions were in progress with two US companies, Westinghouse Electric Company (WEC) and GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH). Based on the progress made in pre-project activities at the sites, progress of land acquisition and discussions with the two companies, it has now been decided to set up reactors in technical cooperation with WEC of USA at Kovvada in Andhra Pradesh. The site at Chhaya Mithi Virdi in Gujarat continues to be designated for setting up nuclear power reactors in technical cooperation with USA.
